The ride home π
- Your puppy may cry, whine, drool, or seem nervous. This is a big change and is completely normal.
- Keep your puppy safely secured in a carrier or with a responsible passenger.
- Do not place your puppy on the ground at public rest stops, gas stations, pet stores, or other high-dog-traffic areas until your veterinarian says your puppy is adequately protected by vaccinations.
- For longer trips, use a clean puppy pad or another low-risk potty setup.
First 24β48 hours at home π‘
- Keep things quiet and calm while your puppy adjusts.
- Introduce family members and other pets gradually.
- Offer the same food and feeding schedule your puppy is accustomed to. We typically free feed all our puppies, slowly transition to set times.
- Make sure fresh water is available.
- It is normal for some puppies to eat a little less or have softer stool from the stress of moving.
- Small Yorkie puppies should not go long periods without eating.
- Please contact your veterinarian promptly if your puppy refuses food, becomes unusually sleepy/weak, vomits repeatedly, has significant diarrhea, or otherwise seems unwell.
- Give your puppy plenty of opportunities to sleepβpuppies need lots of rest!
Potty training πΆ
- Take your puppy to their designated potty area after waking, eating, drinking, playing, and before bedtime.
- We work hard on using puppy training pads.
- Accidents WILL happen! Be patient and consistent.
- Praise successful potty trips rather than punishing accidents.
Your puppy's first vet visit π©Ί
Bring all health records provided by Sugar Coat Yorkies to your veterinarian. Your veterinarian can review the puppyβs vaccine/deworming history and recommend the remaining vaccination schedule, parasite prevention, microchipping, and other care.
Most importantly β€οΈ
Your puppy has just left the only home, littermates, and routine they have known. The first few days may be an adjustment. Give them patience, consistency, affection, and time to settle in.
And please send us pictures! π₯ΉπΎ We LOVE watching our Sugar Coat babies grow and seeing them happy with their new families.
